An Evening of Poetry

Listen to powerful poems written by different poets, who will share their inspiration behind the poems they wrote. Share with the authors your own interpretations of the poems! While listening to and discussing the poems, you will get to snack on an array of appetizers.
Among the poets will be:

  • Dave Louen, a professional artist whose creative talents also includes having authored several poems
  • Julie Naan, a retired editor and English teacher, who will share some poems she co-authored in a Poetry Group she attends at LiveWell
  • Barbara O’Brien, a retired nurse who wrote a book of poetry for her family, the Didactic Rose

Presentation: What is Life? Why is there Life? Life is a Cosmological Event.

From the Presenter: “We live in an incredible time when many of most precious secrets of our reality are becoming understood with scientific clarity. Since I was seven years old, I have been captivated by the desire to understand what life is and how it came to be. We can substantially address these questions now and the vision that emerges is extrordinary, utterly fascinating, and beautiful. These revelations inform me that you and I are AMAZING and I revel in our compantionship. I would like share an overview of this fabulous story with you in hope that this knowlege will bring you wonder and peace also. 

This story revolves around the convergence of two kinds of evolution, evolution of the Universe (Cosmological Evolution) and evolution of life on Earth, and probably other (Biological Evolution). For each inquiry our goal is the same, to comprehend how the entity originated and how it has changed in the course of its evolution- how it works. Out ultimate goal is to reveal how the workings of this cosmic ballet consummates the creation life from non-life. What is life? What is there life?”

Dr. Don Buckley, BSc, MSc, and PhD in botany and evolutionary genetics, is an Emeritus Professor of Biology at Quinnipiac University, Hamden, CT. He currently enjoys membership in the LiveWell community in Plantsville, CT. He is a Smithsonian Laureate, Apple Distinguished Educator, Harry Jack Gray Outstanding Teacher, and recipient of the Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology.

The foundry Saxophone Quartet plays a wide variety of repertoire. Some of it is light and fun like Henry Mancini’s The Pink Panther or Cantina Band from Star Wars. We love to play ragtime tunes like The Cascades by Scott Joplin. We also play standards of the classical saxophone repertoire like this piece by Caryl Florio, not to mention many jazz pieces like Blue Skies. Throughout its history, Connecticut’s LGBTQ population has moved from leading hidden, solitary lives to claiming visible, powerful, valuable, and contributing places in society. Join us to explore the history of that experience: stories of oppression and resilience, tragedy and triumph.

Presented by: Mya Concepcion is a Museum Educator at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History. She develops and teaches educational programs for school and adult audiences. Mya has had experience in both education and museums in CT and holds a B.A. in Art and Art History from the University of Hartford.
